2 homemade handguns turned in as part of South Carolina gun buyback program
Two guns made with a 3D printer were among the weapons turned in at a recent gun buyback event in Spartanburg, South Carolina. On July 30, the Spartanburg Police Department, in partnership with city leaders gave citizens an opportunity to dispose of unwanted firearms.Police said they collected 165 firearms. They said among those were two, fully functionable, homemade/3D printer handguns, which will be destroyed. Two handguns stolen from other states; one was stolen in 2009 and the other in 2012, were also turned in. Citizens were able to participate by simply driving through the parking lot at Spartanburg City Hall with their unwanted firearm(s). Once the firearm was collected and deemed functionable, the owner was given a gift card of $100 for handguns or long guns. Additionally, $150 gift cards were issued to citizens who disposed of “high-powered firearms.” The event allowed participants an opportunity to remain anonymous; therefore, it is unknown how many participants/firearms were turned in from city residents versus county residents. The Spartanburg Police Department has contracted GunBusters, a weapons disposal company, for several years. The service is at no cost to the city of Spartanburg.
